Remembering Our Coolest Hero

Posted on April 5th, 2011.

There are masses of people who take pride in serving others.  Accordingly, this blog entry is a tribute one of our best – William Cameron McCool, Commander, USN and NASA Astronaut. (Deceased)

I remember being startled in the early morning of February 1, 2003 to the sound of what I thought was a super sonic boom.  Upon hearing the reality of what that “boom” meant-I was devastated at the news.  I am from an USAF family and believe there is so much to be grateful for to the men and women who serve our country in the Armed Forces.  To me, this is philanthropy at its core.

We know that Commander McCool, and his six crewmates perished as Space Shuttle Columbia broke up over Texas while re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.  I heard the sound that morning and will never forget it.  My heart ached for those brave astronauts and their families while they were giving so much to this planet; science exploration, our children and our future.  To this day, I still tear up when thinking about their selfless acts of kindness for humanity.  And the pain of the collective loss.

And then, this weekend, I found a quote by Commander McCool.  It sums up how I feel about life on this planet and he wrote it from Columbia while orbiting the Earth:

“From our vantage point, we observe an earth without borders, full of peace, beauty and magnificence, and we pray that humanity as a whole can imagine a borderless world as we see it and strive to live as one in peace.” William Cameron McCool.

William Cameron McCool

I will never forget these words, spoken so eloquently and lovingly.  These words give me hope and peace, knowing that there is a path to follow, and that serving each other, respecting and tolerating differences on a daily basis will carry us to our peace on Earth.

Commander McCool was an extraordinary philanthropist and humanitarian.  I am proud and humbled to have lived on this planet while he was here.
